Our Name & Story
The name Franklin Law Chambers is drawn from Franklin Avenue -- the main commercial thoroughfare in the oil sands that is home to the courthouse.
Franklin Avenue itself commemorates Sir John Franklin, the celebrated British explorer and adventurer. That same spirit of exploration and opportunity continues to define Wood Buffalo: a community built by people who come to discover, build, and pursue new possibilities in a region of extraordinary energy and potential.
“Chambers” refers to the professional rooms occupied by barristers within the medieval Inns of Court in England. It is a deliberate nod to the British common law tradition that underpins the legal system of Canada, Alberta, and Fort McMurray. We take pride in that heritage of rigorous training, advocacy, and reasoned argument.
Rockey Yoo brings two decades of legal experience across a wide range of practice areas. He is motivated by a deep commitment to the legal profession and the belief that the rule of law is essential to democratic and prosperous societies.
His formative years as a lawyer were spent at a leading firm in the oil sands that produced a number of Northern Alberta’s most influential lawyers, including Justices of the Court of King’s Bench and the Court of Justice, Members of the Legislative Assembly, a Member of Parliament, and other leading senior members of the Alberta bar.
Early in his career he successfully argued a reported Charter case (R. v. Downey), an experience that reinforced his belief in the profound impact of the legal profession. After becoming a partner at the local firm, he then embarked on an international career as the leading common-law partner in the disputes group of a Global 200 law firm in Asia, where he handled major international arbitration matters, including the successful defence of a USD 1.4 billion claim.
Mr. Yoo maintains a broad practice encompassing both personal and commercial matters. He remains dedicated to serving the community, recognizing the global importance of the oil sands.
His academic background includes studies in law, international affairs, economics, and the sciences, having studied at the universities of Alberta, British Columbia, Yonsei, and McGill.
In addition to the Alberta bar, he is a member of the New York and California bars, having qualified at a time when those bar examinations were the most difficult in the United States.
He has appeared in hundreds of matters at all levels of court in Alberta and has successfully represented clients in international proceedings against leading Wall Street litigators and English Silks.
